The Choir and Orchestra of Jaén Provincial was started in the summer of 2013 by a group of music lovers from different parts of the province. In March of the same year these people had organized charity concerts in aid of “Caritas” in the town of La Carolina and in Linares and in view of their success decided to give continuity and stability to the project, constituting the current association.

The associaton today is made up of about one hundred people, divided between choir and orchestra. The choir consists of professional singers, music students and amateurs who love choral music, and as for the orchestra, it is made up of professionals and students from the various conservatories in the area. Such diversity makes for an interesting meeting point for sharing, learning and the personal development of its members

This young musical group made its debut on January 3rd 2014 with the New Year's Concert given at the Carlos III Theatre in La Carolina, Jaén.

The first half of the programme was made up of a selection of movie soundtracks arranged for choir and orchestra while in the second half the orchestra performed those pieces which are so popular at that time of year. The concert was warmly greated by both critics and public and was a roaring success.

The presentation concert took place on February 21 at the Aula Magna of the University Campus in the city of Jaén. The programme included a selection of film melodies again in the first part, and works by Bizet, Grieg and others in the second. The concert was another success.

The next concert to be held was on April 5, 2014 in Ubeda. It was a tribute to the distinguished Spanish composer Antón Garcia Abril, and we were honored by his presence. The programme began with the orchestra playing "Kol Nidrei" by Bruch, with the brilliant cellist, Lidia Teruel. Then the choir and orchestra performed various religious compositions by composers such as Mozart, Fauré and Bruckner, closing the first half with a piece by García Abril: "Salve Regina" with a masterful performance by solo soprano Marta Illescas. The concert finished, after the tribute paid to the Aragonese composer, with the Seville processional marches which were orchestrated by he himself for the documentary film "Holy Week" by Manuel Gutierrez Aragon. Both the tribute to Antón Garcia Abril and the concert itself were greated warmly by the audience.

The 2014/15 season concludes with the participation of the Choir and a selection of wind and percussion instruments from the Orchestra in the II Mancha Villa Real Choral Competition. For the occasion the choir performed, for the first time, the main theme from the soundtrack of the film "1492: Conquest of Paradise" and a selection from the musical "Les Miserables" based on the novel by Victor Hugo, with music by Claude Muchel Schönberg.

Activity resumes in September with new auditions to fill vacancies, an A.G.M.-come party for members of the group and the first concert of the 2014/2015 season, which took place in the “Pósito” auditorium in Linares. The Choir, with piano accompaniment, sang again those well-loved pieces: 1492, Les Miserables and in the second part, the selection of various movie soundtracks that was so well received in the previous season.

On November 30, COP performed for the first time in Jaen's Infanta Leonor Theatre, in the 15th Autumn Festival in the capital of the Holy Kingdom. In the first part of the programme the audience enjoyed Vangelis' celebrated soundtrack from the film commemorating the expeditions of Christopher Columbus, and a selection from the musical “Les Miserables”. The second part of the concert was with the orchestra alone, with delightful and entertaining pieces and the pleasure of having Luis Ruben Gallardo as solo violin.

The next challenge for the organization was the rehersals of Mozart's Coronation Mass for Choir and Orchestra, which resulted in the concert given on March 28, 2015 at the Municipal Theatre of Alcaudete, with Juan José Maldonado, principal conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of the Auntónoma University of Tamaulipas (Mexico) as guest conductor. The concert took place three weeks after the "I Contest for Young Performers COP Jaén" another important event to promote learning and musical development in our province.

The 2014/15 season closed with two major concerts given by the orchestra alone. The first took place on May 16 in the theater of Alcalá La Real, with the premiere in Spain of a work by Samuel Pascoe, who also appeared as guest conductor. The second of these proceedings came a week later, on May 23, in which, in the context of the XXVII Festival of Music and Dance of Úbeda, a moving tribute was paid to Mr. Manuel Antonio Herrera Moya, composer of Úbeda, in which some of his most famous and significant compositions were performed.

Currently, the Association, encouraged by the good results of the work carried out so far, continues to promote and consolidate itself, selecting new projects for the near future.
